Pope Francis Passes Away: What Future for Vatican Diplomacy?

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis and progressive pontiff, has passed away at the age of 88. Elected in March 2013, the 266th pontiff and the first ever from Latin America, emphasized a periphery-oriented approach during his 12-year pontificate.

A Pontificate with Diplomatic Overtones

Nicknamed the “Pope of the Poor,” Francis placed particular emphasis on controversial issues such as social justice, homosexuality, sex and financial scandals, the environment, and the reception of migrants. In 2014, he has played a key role in bringing the United States and Cuba closer together and has worked for interreligious dialogue, particularly with Sunni Islam, signing the Declaration on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi in 2019.

His diplomacy, often referred to as “diplomacy of the peripheries,” has consisted of giving a voice to the marginalized on the international stage. Through his various positions, the Pope had a voice that disturbed the world and was heavily criticized by certain social strata.

The passing of Pope Francis thus leaves a void in the Holy See’s diplomacy around the world. His commitment to social and environmental causes has redefined the role of the Vatican, positioning it as an influential moral actor. Relations between the Vatican and many states could be reassessed depending on the direction his successor takes.

Sensitive issues, such as agreements with China on the appointment of bishops or mediation in Middle Eastern conflicts, could be approached differently. Pope Francis leaves a legacy of compassion, dialogue, and commitment to the most vulnerable. His passing marks the end of an era and ushers in a period of uncertainty about the direction the Catholic Church will take on the international stage.

In accordance with the traditions of the Catholic Church, the College of Cardinals will meet in conclave to elect the next pope. The choice of Francis’s successor will be decisive for the future of Vatican diplomacy and its influence on major global issues.
